MAINTENANCE FOR HARDWOOD FLOORING

One of the many great benefits of hardwood floors is that they’re fairly easy to maintain. Depending on the brand and type of hardwood flooring you get, you may never have to refinish them. With the latest in hardwood flooring technology, you now have the ability to spot repair your floors without needing to sand down and refinish the whole thing.

Muddy footprints, spills, and other common household messes are much easier to clean up on hardwood than they are on other surfaces such as carpet. A damp mop with a mild cleaner is all that you need.

Floor Cleaning
  • Regularly Sweep, dust mop, or vacuum using the wand-type attachment on your vacuum cleaner

  • Periodically, clean the hardwood flooring using a swivel-head mop with a soft cover and Hardwood & Laminate Floor Cleaner

  • DO NOT use steam or water

  • Use cleaning kits and floor protectors that are available at our store

Floor Protection
  • Clean spills immediately

  • Reduce the amount of dirt and moisture tracked into the house by placing a natural or colorfast mat outside the entrances

  • Trim your pet's nails to prevent scratches

  • Support furniture with floor protectors that are at least one inch in diameter (replace regularly)

  • Lay a plywood panel on your flooring while moving appliances or any furniture. Walk the item across to prevent scuffs and gouges

  • Replace hard, narrow furniture rollers with wide rubber rollers

  • Limit direct sunlight exposure

  • DO NOT use foam back, rubber, or plastic mats as these can discolor the flooring

  • DO NOT use bleach, ammonia-based cleaners, detergents, abrasive cleaning soaps, wax-based products, polishes, oil soaps, or acidic materials like vinegar

  • DO NOT wear shoes with spike heels or heel taps on the hardwood flooring

  • Leave your shoes at the door if at all possible to avoid potentially dragging in sharp objects in your shoe treads

HOW TO CLEAN HARDWOOD FLOORS

Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines. However, most hardwood floors have similar care and maintenance protocols. The most important rule to remember is that to your hardwood floor, water is the enemy.

Wipe up spills immediately and never let water sit on your floor’s surface. Use a hardwood floor cleaner, which is generally just a mild detergent. Certain manufacturers will sell cleaners designed specifically for their floors. You should vacuum, sweep, or dust, around once a week to keep grime and dirt off your hardwood floors.

HARDWOOD FLOORING MAINTENANCE

Use doormats either outside or inside to help trap dirt and moisture. It is great to place rugs in front of sinks to catch water and also to put them in high-traffic areas to prevent scuffing and scratching. Place leg protector pads underneath all furniture legs to keep them from scratching your floor’s surface. If you have pets, be sure that their nails are trimmed regularly as they can cause damage to your floor’s finish.

Over time, constant direct sunlight may cause fading to floors. A good way to prevent this is to place area rugs in places that get a lot of sun during the day. You may also want to re-arrange your room’s rugs and furniture every so often so that the floors will fade evenly.

SOME IMPORTANT THINGS YOU MUST AVOID:
  • Harsh cleaners such as acrylic finishes, bleach, ammonia, abrasive cleaning soaps, etc. (Stick to manufacturer-recommended cleaners or mild detergents.)

  • Liquids sitting on your hardwood floors. (Wipe up spills immediately!)

  • Wearing shoes with any hard edges like athletic spikes or heel taps.

  • Using foam back, rubber, or plastic doormats. These trap moisture and leave discoloration.

  • Vacuums with beater bars or hard heads.
